The
Yellowstone Airport sits in a bowl shaped valley with a diameter
of about 15 miles. To the east is Yellowstone National Park, which
is a fairly flat area running between seven and eight thousand feet
MSL. From the southwest through the north to the northeast are mountain
ranges rising in elevation to ten to twelve thousand feet MSL. These
ranges are bisected by valleys, which allow even the pilot inexperienced
in mountain flying a good margin of safety when flying at or above
the 10,000 foot level. As always, when flying in mountainous terrain,
mornings are generally the smoothest and coolest time to fly. The
thermals and winds generally start around 11am and last until early
evening. For more information on flying into West Yellowstone, call
one of the numbers listed at the top of the page and ask for RJ. I
am always happy to answer any questions. |
